Grábrók Crater: A 30-Minute Volcano Hike Off Iceland’s Ring Road
Climb a Volcano Before Dinner
Grábrók is a 3,600-year-old scoria crater sitting right beside the Ring Road in Norðurárdalur, about 20 minutes’ drive up the valley from Hvítá Trucks. A wooden staircase climbs straight from the car park to the rim in about 15 minutes; the full loop around the crater edge and back is roughly 2 km — count on 30–45 minutes at an easy pace. It’s free, no permit, no gate, and the path is maintained boardwalk and gravel the whole way.
What You See from the Rim
The crater walls drop away into a moss-lined bowl on one side; on the other, the Norðurá salmon river winds through the valley below with Hreðavatn lake to the west and the pink rhyolite cone of Baula on the northern horizon. Grábrók erupted from a short fissure, and its two smaller sibling craters sit in line beside it — from the rim you read the whole eruption at a glance.
Pair It with Glanni and Paradísarlaut
- Glanni waterfall: five minutes away by car behind Bifröst, where the Norðurá steps down over broad lava ledges — in summer you can sometimes spot salmon jumping.
- Paradísarlaut: a sheltered green picnic hollow next to Glanni, a short stroll from the same car park.
- Timing in July: the staircase is exposed, so pick a calm evening — with the midnight sun you can start the climb at 22:00 in full light, after the day-trippers have gone.
- Footwear: trainers are fine in dry weather; the rim gravel is loose in places, so keep children on the inside of the path.
