Önundarfjörður’s Golden Beach: The Holt Pier a Half-Hour from Ísafjörður

A Golden Beach in a Black-Sand Country

Most Icelandic beaches are black, built from basalt sand ground down by glaciers and surf. Holtsfjara, on the shore of Önundarfjörður in the Westfjords, is one of the exceptions: a sweeping stretch of pale golden sand and dunes at the settlement of Holt. The contrast with the region’s dark cliffs and green slopes is part of what makes it a favorite stop for photographers working their way around the Westfjords Way.

The Pier and the Dunes

A long wooden pier, Holtsbryggja, runs out from the beach into the shallows of the fjord. On calm days the water turns a pale turquoise over the sandbar, and the pier’s weathered planks lead the eye straight out toward the peaks on the far side of the fjord. It is a short, flat walk from the roadside pull-off to the pier itself — no hiking boots required, just a reasonable set of legs and a camera.

The dune system behind the beach is a protected nesting area for eider ducks, along with arctic terns and other seabirds. Keep well back from the dunes and any nesting birds, particularly in May when eiders are on their nests. Staying on the open sand near the pier keeps you clear of the sensitive ground without missing the view.

Getting There from Ísafjörður

Holt sits on Route 61 on the Önundarfjörður side of the tunnel that connects Ísafjörður to Flateyri and Suðureyri. The drive from Ísafjörður is roughly 20 km and takes about half an hour, most of it through the single-lane tunnel. Once through, a signposted turning for Holt leads down to the shore. Because Flateyri sits on the same fjord just a few minutes further on, the two make an easy combined outing — beach first, then coffee or a wander around the village.

• Getting there: About 20 km from Ísafjörður via Route 61 and the Ísafjörður–Flateyri tunnel, roughly a 30-minute drive
