July Is Peak Puffin Season on Vigur Island

Every summer, thousands of Atlantic puffins nest on Vigur, a small island in Ísafjarðardjúp about 30 minutes by boat from Ísafjörður harbour. They arrive in late April and are gone by mid-August — in early July the colony is at full strength and the adults are ferrying beakfuls of sand eels to chicks in the burrows, which means constant, close fly-bys. Boats depart daily from the town pier in summer; the round trip takes roughly three hours, with about half of that on the island itself. Tours sell out in July, so book a day or two ahead.

What You’ll See Besides Puffins

Vigur is a working eider farm — one family lives on the island in summer and harvests down from several thousand eider duck nests, a tradition they’ll explain as you walk the marked paths. Arctic terns nest in the grass right beside the trail and dive at anything that comes near; guides hand out sticks to hold overhead, and it works. You’ll also pass black guillemots along the shoreline, Iceland’s only preserved 19th-century windmill, and Viktoríuhús, one of the country’s oldest timber houses. There’s coffee and homemade cake in the small café before the boat back.

• When: daily departures June–mid-August; puffins peak mid-June to late July.
• Duration: about 3 hours door to door from Ísafjörður harbour.
• What to bring: a windproof layer even in July (expect 8–14°C on the water), and a 200 mm+ lens if you’re photographing — puffins tolerate people surprisingly well, but stay on the paths and off the burrow field.
• Midnight sun: in early July the sun barely sets this far north — late-evening light is the best of the day for photos back in town.
