The Snæfellsnes ring in one day, from Stykkishólmur
The Snæfellsnes ring is the best single driving day in the west of Iceland, and Stykkishólmur is the right place to start it: you sleep at the top of the peninsula, so you drive the loop while day-trippers from Reykjavík are still on the motorway. Roughly 200 km around, comfortably done in 6–8 hours with stops. Here’s the clockwise version we give guests at The Stykkishólmur Inn.
Morning: the north coast
Kirkjufell (35 min from town) — Iceland’s most photographed mountain, with the Kirkjufellsfoss waterfall across the road for the classic shot. Go before 10:00 and you may have it nearly to yourself. Continue west through Grundarfjörður and Ólafsvík, working fishing towns where the harbour cafés are better value than anything on the south coast.
Midday: around the glacier
Rounding the tip puts Snæfellsjökull — the glacier-capped volcano of Jules Verne’s Journey to the Centre of the Earth — above you for an hour of driving. Stop at Djúpalónssandur, a black-pebble beach with the rusted remains of a 1948 trawler wreck and the four old lifting stones fishermen used to prove their strength. Then Hellnar and Arnarstapi, linked by an easy 2.5 km cliff walk over basalt arches and nesting seabirds — if you take one walk today, take this one.
Afternoon: the south side home
Búðir‘s lone black church against the lava field is a five-minute stop that earns its place on every postcard rack. From there it’s under an hour back over the pass to Stykkishólmur — aim to be back by early evening, walk up Súgandisey island by the harbour for the view, and you’ve done the peninsula properly.
Practical notes
- Fuel up in Stykkishólmur or Ólafsvík — stations are sparse around the tip.
- In winter check road.is and vedur.is before setting out; the pass can close in storms.
- Puffins: May to mid-August. Northern lights: September to April — the same loop’s dark stretches are superb on a clear Kp night.
